Background
Carl Hammer knew that the risk of falling can be reduced by 50% when using safety aids in the home.
Along with three others, he created the Safe at Home program to provide home modification services for older adults and those with disabilities. Since 1991, volunteers have installed items such as grab bars, raised toilet seats, stair rails and more in over 8,500 homes.
Carl soon became known as "The Jam Man," when he began accepting donations for jars of his famous jam to support Safe at Home. Carl's team grew when Edie, wife of our long-time Safe at Home Installer Ed, joined as the Jam Ma'am.
Thousands of people are safer at home due to this program and the donations raised from the jam.
Carl continued to make jam into his 90's. Sadly, he passed away on May 29th, 2023. Edie is carrying on his legacy and making jam. We are very thankful for Edie and eternally grateful for the impact that Carl had and continues to have in the community through these programs. He will be missed by Rebuilding Together Sacramento and so many others. You can view his obituary here.
